How to Gap Spark Plugs With a Spark Plug Gap Tool

1. Get your gap spec. Use the number from your tuner, engine builder or plug manufacturer. Engine combination, ignition system and boost level all affect it.
2. Pick the matching head. The 540109 comes with three interchangeable threaded tips, M10x1.0, M14x1.25 and M12x1.25. Thread the plug into the one that fits.
3. Adjust in small steps. Move the ground electrode a little at a time instead of bending it in one shot.
4. Measure and repeat. Check the gap with the included feeler gauges, adjust again if needed, and set every plug in the set to the same number.

Spark Plug Gap Adjuster vs. Coin and Wire Gap Gauges

Coin-style ramp gauges and wire-style gap gauges are measuring tools first. Many have a notch for bending the ground strap, but it is easy to overshoot and end up bending it back and forth. A dedicated spark plug gap adjuster tool, or gap setter, like the 540109 is built for controlled, repeatable adjustment, and the included feeler gauges handle the measuring.

Running iridium plugs? The 540109 is safe to use on iridium spark plugs. As with any fine-wire plug, adjust only the ground electrode and never pry against the center electrode.

If you want every plug at the gap your combination needs, yes. Plugs that come pre-gapped are not always set to your spec, and boosted engines often call for a different gap than stock. Check every plug before it goes in.
